Bringing It All Together â Translating Training Into Match Play Success
So youâve been training hard, practicing your footwork, topspin, and servesâyet when it comes to match play, things just donât seem to click. Donât worry, youâre not alone! Integrating training skills into actual matches can be challenging. Letâs break down some strategies to help you bring your best practice game into match play and start seeing results.
Why Is It Hard to Play Like We Practice?
In practice, youâre relaxed, focused, and aware of whatâs coming next. But in matches, tension, unpredictability, and nerves can throw you off. Matches have an added mental component that can make it harder to translate skills seamlessly. Developing the mental resilience and flexibility to transfer skills is key to consistency.
Tips to Successfully Integrate Training Into Matches
Focus on One Skill per Match: Trying to implement everything youâve learned at once can be overwhelming. Instead, pick one skill you want to work on in a match, such as your serve and follow-up attack. This focused approach lets you gradually bring each skill into your match play without added pressure.
Routine and Warm-Up Consistency: Matches can feel like high-stakes situations. By establishing a warm-up routine similar to your practice sessions, youâll approach matches feeling more grounded. Warming up with your standard drills can make the transition smoother and reduce nerves.
Embrace âGame Drillsâ in Training: Simulate match scenarios in your practice sessions. Try drills that add an element of unpredictabilityâsuch as random placement drills or point play where each point starts with a serve. This gives you practice in decision-making and adjusting on the fly.
Drills to Help Integrate Skills Into Match Play
Drill 1: Serve and Attack
Practice serving and immediately following up with your first attack, just as you would in a match. Aim to work on your serve placement and your readiness for the next shot, simulating the transition from serve to rally.
Coaching Tip: As you practice, think about your opponentâs typical responses to serves. This anticipation helps you stay in control and predict their next move.
Drill 2: Random Point Play
With a partner, start each rally with a serve, and play out the point. But instead of focusing on winning, work on a specific skillâlike footwork or a controlled backhand. This keeps the match intensity but allows you to integrate your focus skill into point play.
Coaching Tip: Donât worry about winning or losing points in this drill. Your goal is to feel confident with the skill youâre practicing, regardless of the outcome.
Drill 3: Controlled Pressure Situations
Create scenarios where youâre âdownâ by a few points. This forces you to practice executing under pressure, just as you would in a match. For example, practice playing a rally where youâre âdownâ 8-10.
Coaching Tip: Approach each âpressure pointâ as you would any other, maintaining calm and executing your shots as practiced.
Wrapping It Up
Bringing practice skills into matches takes time, patience, and the right mindset. Give yourself the chance to apply one skill at a time and donât be too critical if things donât come together immediately. By building consistency and embracing the mental aspects, youâll find your training starting to pay off on game day. Keep up the great work, and remember, every match is another chance to learn and improve!

Mastering the Block â Developing a Rock-Solid Blocking Technique
Blocking is one of those essential skills that, when mastered, can elevate your game to a new level. Not only does a solid block help you stay in the rally, but it also gives you control over the pace and can set you up for an offensive shot. Letâs explore how to develop a great block, why itâs beneficial, and go over some drills to get you blocking like a pro!
Why is Blocking Important?
Blocking is the foundation for handling incoming attacks without putting yourself on the back foot. When your opponent tries to hit powerful topspins, your block can nullify their speed and redirect their power. A well-timed, controlled block can force errors or even create opportunities to counter-attack. It's not just about defense; a strong block can be used as a weapon to disrupt an opponentâs rhythm and give you control over the rally.
Key Elements of a Great Block
Positioning: Good blocking starts with footwork. Position yourself slightly behind the table, with a stable stance, so youâre ready to react quickly to the ball.
Soft Hands: A common mistake is using too much force. For an effective block, keep your wrist relaxed and let the ballâs energy work for you. This means you should absorb the shotâs power rather than adding more.
Angle Control: Adjust your bat angle depending on the spin. To cope with the topspin, angle your bat slightly downward.
Anticipation and Timing: Watch your opponentâs movement and the ball trajectory. The sooner you can read the shot, the better positioned youâll be to block effectively. Practice reacting trying to take the ball before the peak of the ballâs bounce to stay in control and give the opponent less time.
Drills to Boost Your Blocking Skills
Here are some drills that can help you get better at blocking against different types of shots:
Drill 1: Partner Topspin Block
Have a practice partner consistently loop (topspin) to your forehand or backhand. Focus on blocking the topspin without retreating, keeping your position close to the table. This drill helps develop consistency and allows you to feel the power of the topspin without getting intimidated.
Coaching Tip: Work on a soft grip, and allow your bat to slightly absorb the ballâs energy. Your aim is to keep the ball low and controlled.
Drill 2: Random Topspin and Sidespin Block
Ask your partner to mix in both topspin and sidespin loops. This introduces the challenge of adjusting your bat angle depending on the type of spin coming at you. Pay attention to your partnerâs movements and adjust quickly.
Coaching Tip: Focus on using your wrist to adjust the angle as soon as you detect the spin. A quick adjustment helps prevent the ball from veering off to the sides.
Drill 3: Block-and-Counter
Set up a drill where you alternate between blocking and then following up with a counter-attack shot. This drill builds the habit of moving from defense to offense, which is key in match play.
Coaching Tip: Donât just focus on blocking; look for moments when you can shift to an attack. This makes your block a strategic tool rather than a passive response.
Final Thoughts
Building a strong block requires practice and patience, but itâs well worth it. A well-executed block can change the pace of a rally, frustrate your opponent, and give you control over the game. As you practice these drills, remember to stay relaxed, keep your body centered, and experiment with different angles and positions. The more you integrate these elements into your game, the more versatile youâll become on the table.

Training Drill Of The Week
Third Ball Attack
Third Ball Attack
This drill is a focused on learning the skill of looking to finish the point with a strong third ball follow up after serve.
If you are not able to win the point from your serve then the goal is to win the point with your next stroke.
With this drill you are serving short to the FH to draw the opponent in over the table then after they play a FH flick wide to your FH you look to play an aggressive FH down the line.
Do not underestimate the simplicity of this drill. The goal is to get used to being aggressive on the third ball and not playing too safe or passive.
The focus is to be very aggressive on the third ball. You can use a FH Topspin or a FH Flat hit depending on your style of play.
At first you may find you make some errors when going for the aggressive stroke , this will improve the more you repeat the exercise.
There are other variations of this exercise you can do but start with this one , get your level of consistent aggressive strokes hitting the table to a high percentage then try different variations , such as different placement of the return of serve and also different areas to where you hit the third ball.
